Obverse: Bears the head of Athena, goddess of Wisdom, facing right wearing a crested helmet ornamented with three laurel leaves and vine scroll. Part of the horse hair crest is visible, a design element which is almost always missing.

Reverse: Depicts an owl standing with olive leaves and crescent moon. The crescent moon on the left signifies the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C.E. when the Athenians defeated the Persians. Owls were considered by the Greeks to be significant, wise and important birds. Besides being mentioned in early Greek poetry, they were associated with the goddess Athena. The coin weighs 16.4 grams and is set in sterling silver.
