Last Coin of the Samurai era. Beautifully designed Japanese rectangular coin is 12K-18K electrum (alloy of gold and silver) minted at the end of Samurai era. The single flowing script is the guarantee mark assuring fineness. The reverse depicts an artistic flower design representing the mon (family crest) and denomination. It took four of these nishu-kin to equal the larger denomination, Nibu-kin.
Why a rectangular coin? More efficient and no waste! Japan is the only culture to circulate rectangular coins.
